Unlike other lakes, Lake Scaffaiolo, which is 1800 metres above sea level, is not glacial origin has been generated by rainwater withheld by impermeable rocks in this part of the mountains and has neither tributaries or emissaries. The lake has always been tourist destination, as evidenced by numerous documents written by renowned personalities and the presence of Roman coins found in the area. A popular belief tells of the past, that if someone dared disturb the tranquillity of water on him would hit a terrible storm combined with fog and wind. A curiosity: it seems that the name derives from Scaffaiolo "scaffa", namely "basin".
